The City Council remained a Democratic stronghold Tuesday, as two incumbents triumphed over their challengers in Englewood's 2nd and 4th wards.
In the 4th Ward, nine-year incumbent Jack Drakeford defended his seat with more than a hundred-vote margin over independent Dierdre Glenn Paul, receiving 498 votes to her 362. Republican challenger Alice Joy Frank Leonard received 35 votes.
Paul's supporters had attempted to portray Drakeford as in the pocket of Bergen County Democratic Chairman Joseph Ferriero, saying that the incumbent councilman had given "sweetheart deals" to developers favored by Ferriero.
Drakeford campaigned on creating more ratables and more affordable housing. He promised to alleviate flooding and streamline a community-center project. Paul also promised a community center, and said the 4th Ward residents should have more say in how their neighborhood is developed.
Second Ward Councilwoman Charlotte Bennett-Schoen defeated her Republican challenger, Norman Gorlyn, by more than 200 votes, receiving 618 votes to his 411. Schoen had defended a recent raise for non-union city workers, and said that developments under construction would show up on the tax rolls within the next few years.
