About Assemblyman Gordon M. Johnson
Raised in Englewood, and still his home, Assemblyman Gordon M. Johnson is a Real Democrat working to make Bergen County a better, safer place to live, work and raise a family.
In the state legislature, Gordon’s primary focus is on law enforcement and public safety, just as it’s been throughout his professional career. He co-wrote the landmark law that made it harder for terrorists to get access to bomb-making chemicals. In just his very first term, Gordon succeeded in getting his Racial Profile bill signed into law. Assemblyman Johnson also co-sponsored the laws that helped New Jersey stand up to President Bush so we got our fair share of federal Fair Housing funds and made health insurance more accessible.
Assemblyman Johnson is honored to serve as the Vice-Chair of the Law and Public Safety Committee. He also sits on the Transportation and Public Works Committee, as well as the Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee. Gordon was recently elected to the Englewood Council as part of a reform slate of Democrats.
Gordon has joined his running mates, Loretta and Valerie, in taking on political corruption, and bossism. As someone who has sworn to uphold the law, Gordon has no tolerance for those who use the political system for personal gain.
To Gordon M. Johnson, being a Real Democrat means really helping people. And he is extremely proud of the 24 years he spent with the Englewood Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Patrol Sergeant. In 1999, Gordon was appointed Undersheriff of Bergen County, where he went on to became Sheriff two years later. Gordon served as Sheriff until 2002, which was the same year he entered the New Jersey State Assembly. He subsequently moved on to become the Undersheriff responsible for the Bergen County Jail. Gordon is also experienced in labor relations, serving as President of the State P.B.A. Supervisory Officers Association-Local #216.
Gordon M. Johnson is proud to have served his country in the United States Army Reserve, where he retired with the rank of Major. Gordon is highly decorated and holds the National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, NATO Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal and many more. In 1990, Assemblyman Johnson served in Operation Desert Storm, where he was responsible for two Convoy Support Centers in the Saudi Arabian Desert. In 1996, he was deployed to Germany in support of Operation Joint Endeavor where he was part of a team that coordinated the activities and missions of the Civil Affairs units stationed in Bosnia.
Assemblyman Johnson graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas College with a B.S. in Social Science. He holds a Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision from Seton Hall University, as well. Gordon is also a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Assemblyman Gordon M. Johnson lives in Englewood, the town where he was raised, with his wife Jacqueline. He has a daughter, Stephanie, and two sons, Brandon and Stephen.
